ISRO Achieves Historic Model Rocket Launch in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh
Kushinagar, June 14, 2025 – In a groundbreaking milestone for India’s space endeavors, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), in collaboration with the Astronautical Society of India and the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), successfully conducted a model rocket launch test in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh. This event marked the first-ever payload launch via a rocket from Uttar Pradesh soil, showcasing the state’s emerging role in India’s space ambitions.
The 15 kg sounding rocket was launched at 5:14:33 PM from Junglipatti village in Tamkuhiraj tehsil. It soared to an altitude of 1.12 kilometers before deploying a small payload, which safely descended within 400 meters of the launch site using a parachute. The test was a significant step toward fostering space education and innovation, serving as a precursor to the ‘IN-SPACe CANSAT and Model Rocketry India Student Competition 2024–25,’ scheduled for October-November 2025. This upcoming competition will see approximately 900 student-built satellites tested, offering young innovators a platform to engage with space technology.
While some initial reports described the payload as a "satellite," ISRO clarified that it was a suborbital payload, not an orbital satellite. India’s only operational spaceport for orbital launches remains Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. The Kushinagar launch underscores ISRO’s efforts to decentralize space-related activities and inspire grassroots participation in space exploration.
