When the moon comes between the Sun and the Earth, a solar eclipse occurs. This event always happens on the new moon day.

We will understand by example about solar eclips :

we know Sun, Earth and Moon revolve in their long orbits . When the Moon comes between the Sun and the Earth, the shadow of the Moon appears on the Earth.
 We call it solar eclipse.

History :

Astronomers have determined from mathematics that there are 41 solar eclipses and 29 lunar eclipses in a period of 18 years and 18 days. There can be up to 5 solar eclipses and 2 lunar eclipses in a year. But there should be 2 solar eclipses in a year. Yes, if there are 2 eclipses in any year, then both of them will be eclipsed
Our sages have forbidden food at the time of solar eclipse, because they believed that germs spread with abundance at the time of eclipse. Microorganisms collect in food items, water etc. and contaminate it. So the sages have asked the characters to put kush, so that all the germs get collected in the kush and they can be thrown after eclipse. They are made holy by putting fire in the characters so that germs die. Law of bathing after eclipse Designed so that during the bath the heat flow inside the body increases, the germs inside and outside are destroyed and washed away.
